Joseph Bunting

My great niece Ella has bunting for her room and although my great nephew Joseph has the jungle chums blanket that I made, he has to have bunting too so that he and his lovely big sis are the same.

Ella’s bunting is (of course!) pink and largely floral

But Joseph’s is all the primary colours, checks and spots. I love both equally.

I think his nursery decor is quite simple so it should fit in and hopefully last him quite a while.

I have been banned from buying more fabric since my stash is slightly unmanageable at the moment but it is amazing what I find that I forgot that I had!!

I’m not getting much sewing done at the moment anyway so I shouldn’t buy any more until I have worked my way through what I have.

I think I might have to get on with Christmas bunting next though as the weeks are flying by and the season is creeping upon us.

I haven’t even started some of the things I need to make as Christmas gifts! Aaaaagh!!

Pay it Forward

sue chef

Pay it Forward is a lovely but random act if quite unexpected kindness.

I love the idea of  random acts of kindness, it is a faith restorer and although the recipient benefits, there is a huge to the giver by the simple act of giving.

It can be an anonymous act – something like paying for a coffee for the next customer.

It can be a truly kind act – such as giving a homeless person a scarf when it is freezing cold and their need is greater than yours.

It can be a thoughtful act that will just make someone’s day that bit easier – like putting more money in their parking meter so they don’t get a ticket.

It can be an unexpected gift – of something someone you love needs or desires.

The truth is that it can be anything you want it to be

None of them is a costly act and will leave you feeling good knowing someone else feels better today.

Who knows it might just make enough of a difference to change someone’s life.

There is a small ‘pay it forward’ movement on Facebook where you make your statement about wanting to do something nice and offer a surprise act of kindness to the first 5 who say they are in.

The deal, of course, is that they do the same with 5 people who respond to their offer and so on.

The last of my five arrived in New Zealand recently.

Sue has been showing off some of her culinary skills on FB recently so  an apron seemed a good idea.

The ‘To Kill a Mocking Bird’ I sent her was my copy from school but much more random than the apron although I know that she hasn’t read it.

In order to keep the small savigars in the family all the same, I have just posted off bunting for little samuel.

It has some of the green to match his nursery decor but lots of other colours so that it will go with many different things and colour schemes as he grows up.

One of my most loyal bunting customers, Catherine, contacted me recently to let me know that a friend would be needing some bunting pretty quickly.

Although the order for the friend went elsewhere in the end, it was lovely to hear from Catherine again.

It was especially lovely because it came with the news that she has a new ‘little man’ in her household. .

My little Moo stickers came in handy to fasten the tissue paper and this turquoise and blue ribbon is rather cute.

I hope to hear from Catherine again when she receives her parcel and perhaps again if the family numbers increase or those of her friends do.

If there is more bunting required to travel over the Irish Sea to Dublin, I will be very happy.

heart patchwork

the finished blanket

I find it hard to keep up with all the things that I want to make, the list is endlessly long.

Sometimes seeing something that inspires me takes me back to an idea I had and thought I’d forgotten about.

the finished cushion

Heart patchwork is one of those and since I am on a bit of a patchwork roll, I thought I’d give my idea an airing.  I also recently bought quilting rings that hold the quilt in a neat roll while you do your quilting stitches.

quilting rings

I cheat (well, I think it is cheating) and quilt with my normal sewing machine. I’ve never done swirls or shapes and stick to straight lines mostly and it seems to work.

I was only going to do a cushion but got carried away cutting out and decided to do a matching cot quilt.

embroidery silks ready for the hearts

It came together quite quickly and was a real pleasure but the hand applique is still the most pleasurable part of it for me, it is sooooooo relaxing. The rainbow colours of the embroidery silks are like sweeties and selecting the right one for the work is as much fun as the sewing

quilt without wadding, backing, applique or quilting

I used to sit at my sewing machine for hours making clothes, curtains which I still love but given the choice I prefer the hand work and I now find delight in every stitch of hand appliqué.

appliqued heart

The theme was cream and pink with more emphasis on the cream as I wanted it to be subtle (unlike the next one I will make I think!).

Anyway, they are both finished now and ready to be gifted or go onto my internet shop. Someone is due to have a baby soon and if it is a girl, it will be the perfect gift.
